Bank of america uses a deposit between $0.01 and $0.99 to authorize an account to account money transfer. See the BoA help pages (found by searching google for thefew exact text of this charge from your bank statement).

The penny scam is not related to bank of america. Scammers can give themselves any name. This month I have had a scammer put 1 cent into my account twice. They gave themselves the name bank of america. I called the official bank of america and asked them if they have a record of this and they said no. They never do that. Just make sure you check your account and are aware of unusual activity. It is good to be proactive anyway. It is a pain but eventually your bank will set up a block against penny deposits.
